These are Bode's Galaxy (on the right) and the Cigar Galaxy (on the left). The Cigar Galaxy is called a starburst galaxy, a volatile place generating star formation at a much higher rate than most galaxies. The red color near the center of the Cigar Galaxy is caused by hydrogen gas being blasted out of the galaxy by supernovae.
